Problems in a child…
The most common reason for people to want to come in for family therapy is because of difficulty with one or more of the children. This can be manifested in behavioral, academic, or social symptoms.
My child refuses to come to therapy.
That’s okay. I have helped many families without ever seeing the child. This may not make sense to you at this point. But if you start working with me and do the things that I suggest and the things that make sense to you, you have the ability to bring about changes in the system.
What if it is my child that is having problems, not me?
Yes, it is very possible that your child is the one who is absorbing the most anxiety in the system right now. But it is you—the adult bearing financial responsibility—who can do something about that anxiety.
When you start to manage your anxiety differently, your child will change in response.
“My family is dysfunctional!”
Another common reason that people seek my family therapy services in North County San Diego, CA, is because they say their family is “dysfunctional.” If I had a dollar for each time I heard this statement, I’d be able to retire now!
The way that I think about these families is that they are having difficulty functioning well. If one person in the family can take responsibility for doing their part better, the whole family can start to do better.
How I work with a family.
It does not matter who in the family is having symptoms. I am most interested in seeing the most motivated, financially responsible adult(s) in that system. As the leaders in the family, you have the ability to make changes in the system.
You may not understand what I am saying, and that is okay. Part of my job is to explain my thinking about anxiety in the system and to share with you proven ways to bring about lasting change.
Take the next step.
Making a change is often one of the most difficult choices to make. But continuing to make the same choice will keep you trapped in the same results. It’s time to try something better.
